Prompt better: how to write story ideas that get great results
Practical tips for story ideas, premises and fine-tuning that produce better manuscripts on barnbok.ai.
Why the prompt matters
On barnbok.ai the whole story is built on what you write at the start – the story idea, the premise and later fine-tuning. A clear prompt gives a manuscript that feels personal, the right length and the right tone for the child's age.
Good prompts help you:
- Get a story that matches the child's personality and interests
- Avoid vague or generic tales
- Reach a manuscript you want to illustrate more quickly
"A good story idea does not have to be long – it just needs to answer who, where and what happens."
Write a strong story idea
When you start from Create → Own idea or directly in the flow, think about these building blocks:
- Main character – the child's name and one trait (brave, curious, shy)
- Setting – the forest, the sea, grandma's kitchen, space
- Conflict or adventure – what needs to be solved or discovered?
- Feeling – should it be cozy, exciting or funny?
Example: "Ella finds a talking squirrel in the park behind the house. Together they search for the squirrel's lost treasure map before the rain arrives."
You can also click ready-made examples in the interface – such as cows coming out or the shark in the sea – and adapt them.
Premise and fine-tuning
Photo flow: After analysis, AI suggests several premises – short versions of how the story could develop. Pick the one that feels right, write your own, or ask for new suggestions based on the image.
Own idea (/create): you cast characters, write the story and choose reading age (0–2, 3–4, 5–6 or 7+ years) and tone already on the start page — the Adjust step and a manual premise are not used.
Later, in the manuscript step, you can polish with a prompt – for example "make it funnier and younger" or "add a friend named Milo". The manuscript is rewritten, but character portraits are often kept.
Common mistakes to avoid
- An idea that is too broad ("Ella has an adventure") with no setting or goal
- Mixing several completely different stories into the same prompt
- Forgetting reading age – in Own idea you choose it on the start page; in the photo flow you set it in Adjust so language and text length match
Conclusion
Prompting on barnbok.ai is about clarity, not long texts. Describe who the story is about, where it takes place and what should happen – then AI helps you the rest of the way.
